Italian data shows HUS decline in 2025
More than 40 cases of a serious condition that can develop after an E. coli infection were reported in 2025 in Italy. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a severe complication associated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections that can cause kidney failure, brain damage and death.
